Fall is my absolute FAVORITE! The cooler weather, the countdown to approaching holidays, the return of PSL coffee, and all the fun activities for the classroom are just a few reasons why! (Side note: Have you tried the Pumpkin Cold Brew from Starbucks?! I'm still on the fence) Anyways, I'm excited to share some of my favorite Fall books and activities for the month of October with you today. From read alouds to math and science, I hope you'll find some Fall inspiration to get you excited as well! The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin
Spookley is the sweetest story of a little pumpkin that is having trouble fitting in. All the other pumpkins are round but Spookley is square. When a storm blows through, Spookley discovers just how valuable he is despite his differences. You can find it on Amazon here.
I love ALL that this book has to offer students and the rich, meaningful discussions that take place after reading the story. If you're interested in the Spookley Booklets I make with my students, here is the Kinder version and here is one for Grades 1-3.
DIY Playdough Kits
Explore your students creativity with this DIY Monster Kit. Each student can build their own monster, create a Monster ID card, write about their monster, and fill out a Monstrous Character Traits page. This activity set makes for a fun addition to your Fall or Halloween activities! Just add some Playdoh and whatever fun crafty items you have on hand like pipe cleaners, google eyes, and beads! If monsters aren't your thing, check out my brand new DIY Spider Kit! It's the perfect way to get your students excited about researching and learning all about spiders! This kit includes printables to make your Spider Bags (just add playdoh, pipe cleaners, and eyes!) and integrates literacy with an ALL ABOUT MY SPIDER writing page!
We identify and describe Spider Adjectives with the included template and record spider facts in the mini spider fact book. There are multiple levels of writing included, perfect for K-2! Grab it HERE!
Stumpkin
Chances are, if you've read Stumpkin (the story of a stemless pumpkin who dreams of becoming a jack-o-lantern) you fell in love! I created some fun graphic organizers and literacy activities to go with this adorable story! You can find them HERE
Candy Corn Science & Taste Test Freebie!
Science and candy collide with this fun experiment for Dissolving Candy Corn. I like to complete this activity with my firsties during the week of Halloween and it's always a hit! In this experiment students classify solids according to their physical properties, predict the changes that may occur when different materials are mixed, and observe and describe the results of mixing those different materials. Grab this Science Activity HERE.
We also do a little taste testing! While I'm not a fan of candy corn, turns out some of my students LOVE them. You can grab this class graphing & estimation freebie by clicking the picture below!

Halloween Math Riddles
What flavor pie do ghosts like best? Booberry of course. I've never had a student complain about doing math when these Math Riddles & Jokes are involved. In fact, they always beg me for MORE! I love when my kids are practicing important math skills and they don't even realize it's work. These riddles are perfect for morning work, homework, and math stations. Students have to answer the math problems provided in order to solve the riddle or joke. These Halloween Math Riddles are currently available in my TpT store for 1st grade and 2nd grade.
Bats!
We love researching bats during the Fall season and this Bat craftivity is a fun way to write about them! Here are some of my favorite Bat Books:
The Biggest Pumpkin Ever
I love using The Biggest Pumpkin Ever by Steven Kroll to focus on the theme of "working together." This Book Social set is filled with activities for practicing -ed endings, Text Conversations (cards to facilitate book and social skills conversation), reading response sheets & writing prompts (Problem/Solution, Beg/Mid/End, & Making Connections). It also includes a Craftivity (Biggest Pumpkin Ever Mini Book) & Anchor Chart Activity! Grab the book on Amazon HERE and The Biggest Pumpkin Ever Book Social set HERE.
Where's My Mummy
Where's My Mummy is a cute, simple, and not-so-scary read aloud that I like to share with my first graders. I like to follow up this story with this mummy craftivity where students make a connection to the story in the body of the mummy. They always giggle when we pull out the toilet paper ;) You can grab this book on Amazon HERE and the mummy craftivity HERE.
